What to Wear to Dance Class (and why it actually matters)

We get this question all the time, and honestly… we love it.

Because what dancers wear to class isn’t just about “looking the part” — it actually plays a really big role in how they move, learn, and feel in the studio.

So here’s our take on it at Industry 💛

First things first… no school uniforms

We know it can be tempting to come straight from school and jump into class (and we totally get how busy afternoons can be), but school uniforms are a no for dance.

They’re usually:

• too restrictive
• not designed for movement
• and not quite the vibe for feeling like a dancer

Getting changed before class helps create that little mental shift from “school mode” into “dance mode” — and that matters more than you’d think.

It doesn’t have to be “perfect”

We’re not about being overly strict or making things stressful.

Your child doesn’t need a full IDC outfit from head to toe to walk into class.

What we do care about is that what they’re wearing is:

• comfortable
• easy to move in
• fitted enough for teachers to see alignment and technique

That could be:

• IDC uniform
• or plain activewear like a leotard, crop, singlet, shorts, or leggings

As long as it’s appropriate and allows them to move freely, you’re on the right track.

Why it actually matters

Wearing the right kind of dancewear helps more than people realise.

It means:

• teachers can properly see and correct technique
• dancers can move safely and confidently
• nothing is getting in the way (literally)
• and everyone feels like part of the team

It also builds a sense of pride. When students walk into class dressed ready to dance, they show up differently.

It’s about feeling like a dancer

At the end of the day, this isn’t about rules for the sake of rules.

It’s about helping every student walk into the studio feeling:

• confident
• prepared
• and ready to give it a go

Because when they feel like a dancer, they dance like one.
